What were your thoughts on the recent boxing events in the Paris Olympics? There’s been a lot of controversy about a couple of boxers in particular who were accused of being male. One in particular the rather well built Imane Khelif from Algeria.
Not a lot of the world was aware of Imane before the Olympics thrust her into the public eye. There had been some previous issues regarding her sexuality meaning that she’d produced an excess amount of testosterone which some competitions in the past had concluded made her male. I’m not a scientist but there were other trained professionals who came to this conclusion.
Fast forward to the Paris Olympics and Imane has been declared a woman by those officials. I haven’t seen her junk, nor do I want to. The woman towered over her Italian opponent and basically broke her nose with the first punch. A punch that demolished a professional fighter in one hit.
I think that there’s enough doubt in what’s going on with this that anyone raising these doubts is right to do so. the vocal and moral majority is quick to jump to her defence, but what about the rights of the woman who trained her entire life for that moment only to get her face beaten in on the first punch? What makes one womans rights more important than another womans rights?
I look forward to seeing how this turns out, as it’s a murky issue. I’m not saying she’s definitely a man, but there’s enough doubt in my mind that I really feel this needs to be looked into more seriously. I don’t think people are wrong for being concerned about this issue.
